Záhony: a strategic location at the EU’s Eastern borders

After a major drop in the years following the Millennium, global FDI flow gained momentum again in 2004 and this trend has continued ever since.

Producing a historically unparalleled economic growth, China and India have emerged among FDI importers as the largest recipients. A major part of the industrial output from these two economic giants and the other fast developing Asian economies end up at European markets. Most of these products need completion – assembling, sorting, packing, etc. – before being delivered to distribution outlets.

Simultaneously, more and more overseas and European producers and service providers are targeting the fast-developing East-European and Central-Asian consumer markets. This huge volume of products can be moved only by state-of-the-art distribution centers, reloading stations and supplementary services, all equipped with the most advanced infrastructure.

Hungary’s central location in Europe is one of its key competitive advantages. With four major European transportation corridors running through the country, Hungary is considered to be a gateway and a central hub in Europe. In order to exploit these benefits, Hungary is determined to enhance its infrastructure and improve its integration into the pan-European networks.

It is in the Záhony region at Hungary's North-Eastern corner and the EU’s Schengen border, that the wilde gauge railway system of the CIS countries and the European standard railway gauge system meet. As part of its regional development strategy, the Hungarian government has launched a major project to develop the city of Záhony and its environment into a Special Area. To underline the importance of the project a special government commissioner has been appointed who will co-ordinate related activities under the auspices of the Prime Minister’s Office.

By 2015, the volume of cargo passing through Záhony is estimated to increase by 60 percent. Most of these products will need further processing or logistical services. Then Záhony development Programme will begin in 2008. Whether you are a manufacturer, an international trader, a logistics service provider or an investor, the Záhony project offers a host of exciting new business opportunities.
